Quick Tips For Buying Hope Chests
1. First known as blanket chests, they became known in early colonial America as dowry chests, in reference to a bride moving the possessions and dowry inside the chest to her new home. As more women began storing items inside the chests in preparation and hope of marriage, the term hope chests was adopted.
2. Hope chests can be a way to recall the fulfillment of past hopes, such as when you remove a wedding dress from inside, or just a doorway to memory as you touch your Grandma's quilt or page through cherished photo albums. Hope chests are a suitably old-fashioned resting place for the lost art of love letters, or the perfect venue to display your prized collection of antique handkerchiefs.
3. Hope chests need not lose their initial intention simply because times have changed. Your hope chest could be an encyclopedia of your daughter's life. Make your hope chest the storage place for memorable moments: photos of school competitions; those 5 stitches from a biking accident; an A+ English paper; or as she grows, college transcripts, or a bank's approval of her small business loan.
4. Taking proper care of your hope chest will help guarantee its lasting beauty. Remember to never use furniture polishes with wax in them. The wax will build up on the surface of your hope chest and cause cloudiness that dulls your finish. Also, always spray the polish on a towel and not directly on the hope chest. This will prevent over saturation and insure an even application.
